What Are Blackheads & How Are They Treated?

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

Acne comes in various forms with one being blackheads. When looking at your skin, you may see small spots that appear to be black. These spots are considered open comedones or blackheads. This is where oil and dead skin cells clog your pores. When the pore is open and becomes exposed to air, the debris is oxidized and turns black. Blackheads are commonly found on your nose, cheeks and forehead but may also appear on your body.

While you may want to try popping or picking these stubborn fellas, they should be left alone. You can also have a professional extract them, which is much safer for your skin. Popping them can cause trauma to the skin leading to scarring or an infection. The treatment for blackheads can be different for everyone. A good skincare regimen along with in-clinic treatments are a must for the clean and clear appearance of your skin. Salicylic acid and AHA’s such as glycolic acid are the best options. Salicylic acid seeps into pores to help dissolve debris, whereas glycolic acid is a gentle exfoliant that creates faster cell turnover.

In conclusion, blackheads are very common and can be treated with a correct treatment plan. It is always best to consult with a professional before starting new products.
